The Sunnyside subdivision was established in 1942 to accommodate Jacksonville workers during World War 2. After the war, the Little Rock Airforce base was constructed in 1955, leading to many airmen residing in Sunnyside. The houses were affordable for these new airmen. However, over time, the neighborhood deteriorated due to absentee landlords and neglect. Despite the decline and disappearance of some original homes, there are residents who still call Sunnyside home.
The Genesis Project was birthed from the idea of bringing restoration to neighborhoods in the local community. The mission of this project is not only to bring restoration to neighborhoods, but to bring people within the community together for a common purpose.

One might wonder why it's essential to restore Sunnyside's beauty. For me, the answer lies in my personal connection to the area. I moved to Arkansas in 2003 and lived on Pike Ave. Later that year, my mother and stepfather bought a house on Pulaski and Central.
My aunt and late uncle were early residents of Sunnyside. Following them, I moved to the neighborhood. My husband worked as a mail carrier in Sunnyside for a decade. He cherished the community, and they reciprocated the sentiment. Even nicknaming him “ The hallelujah mailman” because he would greet them that way and he would stop and pray for them if asked.
Sunnyside holds a special place in my heart as it is intertwined with my personal history.
